Born Tokichiro Kinoshita, Hideyoshi served under the Imagawas, but shifted allegiance to the Oda clan. Despite being given the disparaging nickname “Monkey” by Nobunaga Oda, Hideyoshi emerged as a successful leader. He defeated Mitsuhide Akechi in the Battle of Yamazaki and drew the whole country within his grasp. After that, he kicked about Katsuie Shibata and an Oda retainer, gaining prominence throughout the land and convincing the daimyo of his ability to unify the land. The first man in Japanese history to rise from the peasantry to a position of prominence.
