In Dynasty Warriors PSP, a stage is divided into multiple areas. Battles take place in each of these areas, and conquering areas allows you to continue. Each area can be completed in just a few minutes, which is ideal for portable play. There are a variety of areas, each with their own influence on the battlefield.

Although you need to seize control of the enemy's Main Camp in order to clear a stage, it is dangerous to simply pick the shortest route. There are several units surrounding the Main Camp, and a number of very strong officers are guarding it. Instead of heading towards the Main Camp immediately, you should fight battles in other areas and level up your officer. If you take too much time, there is the danger of running out of supplies. Take the location of the enemy's depots or forts into account and plan your advance carefully.
